The course is very popular and has been highly successful. There are always many positive changes in the students and this can be directly attributed to the longevity of the program being held 2 days per week over one semester. Change is a time consuming process and cannot be expected without the development of trust and a meaningful relationship being established between the students, TAFE teachers and the teacher from the Behaviour Team.
Of the students who have completed the ‘Connect to the Future’ course at Granville TAFE Outreach many have gone on to further work and study including:
- 1st year apprentice in carpentry and joinery
- undertaking of a fitness course at Macquarie Fields
- completion of several short courses over 2010
- application to study baking in 2011
- studying vehicle spray painting at Granville TAFE
- studying Carpentry full time at Chullora Campus TAFE NSW
- studying year 11 at Punchbowl High School
- securing employment with an auto-electrician in Lakemba. Has been offered and accepted the opportunity to begin an apprenticeship in 2011
- undertaking employment with his father in a panel beating shop and planning to embark on a plumbing apprenticeship come 2011
These outcomes are evidence in the change in disengaged students, now actively seeking work and training with confidence. Another noted outcome was that students who had previously been amongst the least engaged and enthusiastic, are now showing high levels of enthusiasm and are amongst the most punctual and independent.
